Why your first language matters in therapy

Many Ukrainians in Dubai work, negotiate and make friends in English every day. Yet when the conversation turns to childhood, family, fear, shame, grief or a painful argument, the words in a second language can feel borrowed. The language in which you first lived those experiences often carries a directness that English softens.

This is not a rule for everyone. For some people English offers a useful distance, and at certain stages that distance helps. For others, Ukrainian opens layers of feeling that English does not reach.

For many Ukrainians, language now carries more than meaning. Some switched to Ukrainian as adults, by choice. Some still think in two languages and feel uneasy about it. Some find that the war is easier to leave unspoken in any language. All of this is welcome in the room exactly as it is.

You do not have to stay in one language. Many clients move between Ukrainian, English and Russian in the middle of a sentence, choosing whichever word is closest to what they feel. That flexibility is part of the work.

Who these sessions are for

Sessions in Ukrainian may suit you if:

  • you have moved to Dubai and feel safe here, yet part of you is still at home;
  • you check the news first thing in the morning and last thing at night, and cannot stop;
  • you live apart from parents, a partner or adult children and carry that distance every day;
  • you feel guilty for living a calmer life than those who stayed;
  • you notice anxiety, irritability, poor sleep or a sense of numbness that you cannot quite explain;
  • you are tired of being the strong one who copes with everything alone;
  • the same arguments keep returning in your relationship, especially since the move;
  • you want to talk about feelings in the language you feel them in.

You do not need a precise request. It is enough to know that the old ways of coping are no longer working.

Ukrainians in Dubai: relocation, war and separated families

For many Ukrainians, the move to Dubai was not a free choice but a response to circumstances. On top of the usual challenges of adjusting to a new country, something else comes along.

You may be safe here while your thoughts stay at home. You may hold a family together across time zones, through phone calls and messages, never quite sure what the next day will bring. You may hesitate to settle in properly because part of you is still waiting to return. When there are missile alerts at home or tension in the region here, the body can react before the mind has time to make sense of it.

I have seen how often a simple question, "How is home?", is met with anger. Some people stopped watching the news because the pain was unbearable, and now carry shame for looking away. Others keep watching and feel anger towards those who stopped. Underneath, both are often carrying the same pain: the knowledge that not much can be done from here, and fear of not knowing what tomorrow brings.

These reactions are not signs of weakness. They are common responses to a large and often forced change. Psychological support can help you make sense of what this experience has stirred, so that you do not have to carry it silently and alone.

Sessions in Dubai and online across the UAE

In-person sessions take place in Dubai and are easy to reach from Dubai Marina, JLT, JBR, Downtown Dubai and Business Bay. Online sessions are available across the UAE, including Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates, and for clients who travel or live abroad. The format is the same: private, unhurried and in the language you choose.

Many Ukrainian clients combine both formats, meeting in person when they can and continuing online during travel or busy periods.

How the first session works

  1. 1You book a time on the booking page and choose Ukrainian, English or Russian.
  2. 2We meet in person in Dubai or online, for about 50 minutes.
  3. 3We talk about what brought you now: the situations, reactions and cycles that keep repeating.
  4. 4Together we outline what you would like to change or understand, and agree on a useful direction for further work.

You can begin with a simple sentence: "I don't quite understand what is happening to me, but I can't go on like this."

Couples counselling in Ukrainian and English

Couples sessions are available when both partners speak Ukrainian, when the couple is multilingual, and when one partner is more comfortable in Ukrainian while the other mainly speaks English. Relocation and distance from home often change the balance in a relationship: one partner adapts faster, the other feels left behind. Sessions give both of you room to describe your side and to understand the cycle between you.

For couples I recommend more time than an individual session: 75 minutes, 90 minutes or 2 hours.
