Why language matters in therapy
Many people function comfortably in English at work and in daily life. But emotional experiences (childhood memories, family dynamics, fear, shame, grief, or relationship conflict) may be easier to describe in Russian. The language you first processed those experiences in often carries a directness that a second language can flatten.
This does not mean everyone processes emotions better in their native language. Some clients feel more distance working in English, and that distance can be useful at certain stages. Others find that Russian gives them access to emotional layers that English does not reach.
You do not have to stay in one language throughout a session. Many clients move naturally between Russian, English, and Ukrainian, switching mid-sentence when a concept lands more precisely in one language than another. That flexibility is part of how the work happens.
Who these sessions are for
Sessions with a Russian-speaking psychologist in Dubai may suit you if:
- you live and work in English but find it easier to talk about feelings in Russian;
- you notice anxiety, overthinking or tension that affects your sleep, work or relationships;
- you have relocated to Dubai and feel that part of you has not quite arrived;
- you are tired of being the one who copes with everything alone;
- the same conflicts keep returning in your relationship;
- you live far from family and miss the support you used to have;
- you want a psychologist who understands both the language and the cultural background.
You do not need a clear request before the first session. It is enough to know that something has become difficult.
Areas of work
- Anxiety, overthinking, and nervous-system responses
- Emotional regulation and building capacity for steadiness
- Burnout, chronic stress, and emotional exhaustion
- Relationship patterns, communication breakdown, and emotional distance
- Couples counselling, conflict cycles, resentment, and emotional disconnection
- Self-worth, inner critic, and people-pleasing
- Life transitions, identity questions, and personal growth
- Psychoeducation and understanding psychological patterns
Russian-speaking psychologist in Dubai and online across the UAE
In-person sessions take place at Sage Clinics in Downtown Dubai, which is easy to reach from Business Bay and DIFC. Online sessions are available across the UAE, including Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates, and for Russian-speaking clients who travel or live abroad.
Many clients combine both formats: meeting in person when they can, and continuing online during travel, busy periods or a move. The work stays the same: private, unhurried and in the language you choose.
What happens in the first consultation
You do not need to arrive with a perfectly formulated request. Many people come to the first session knowing that something has been difficult, but without a clear name for it.
The first session is used to understand what has been happening, the situations, patterns, and cycles that seem to repeat. Together we begin to identify what you would like to change or understand, and consider the most useful direction for further work.
Individual consultations are approximately 50 minutes, available in Russian, English, or Ukrainian, online or in person in Dubai.
How the first session works, step by step
- 1You choose a time on the booking page and say which language you prefer.
- 2We meet in person in Dubai or online, for about 50 minutes.
- 3We talk about what brought you now: the situations, reactions and cycles that keep repeating.
- 4Together we outline what you would like to change and agree on a direction for further work.
How the first session works in practice
Before we meet. You send a short request through the booking page. It opens in WhatsApp, and the time is confirmed once you receive a reply. It helps to mention whether you would like to meet in person in Downtown Dubai or online, which language feels closest, and a few words about what brings you. A few words are enough.
During the session. An individual session lasts 50 minutes. You can speak Russian from the very first minute, or move between Russian, English and Ukrainian whenever one language fits better. I will ask what is happening now, how it affects your sleep, work or relationships, and what you have already tried. You decide how much to share and at what pace.
After the session. Towards the end we talk about what could be useful next. Many people begin with weekly sessions, and the rhythm is something we decide together. The first consultation is also a chance to see whether working together feels right for you, with no obligation to continue.
For couples. A first couples session lasts 75 or 90 minutes, so both partners have enough room to speak and to listen.
Relocation and psychological adjustment
Moving to a new country involves more than logistics. The loss of a familiar support system, distance from family and friends, a shift in professional identity, and the disruption of established routines can create a particular kind of emotional weight, one that is easy to dismiss because the external circumstances look fine.
Some people experience isolation, dependence on a partner's relocation or career decision, or difficulty investing emotionally in the new country because part of them expects the move may not be permanent. These are not signs of weakness. They are common responses to a significant transition.
Psychological support can help make sense of what the adjustment has stirred, and work through it rather than carrying it silently. If this resonates, you may also find it useful to read about psychological support for expats in Dubai.
Couples counselling in Russian and English
Couples sessions are available for two Russian-speaking partners, multilingual couples, and couples where one partner is more comfortable in Russian while the other primarily communicates in English. This includes intercultural and expat couples navigating different cultural expectations alongside language.
For couples, I generally recommend allowing more time than for an individual consultation. Both partners need enough space to describe their perspective, respond to each other, and explore the interaction without the conversation being cut short. Available session lengths are 75 or 90 minutes. The most suitable duration can be discussed when arranging the appointment.

What people come to me with
People come to me when their emotional state keeps getting heavier, anxiety starts to affect everyday life, and it becomes hard to understand on their own what is happening.
- anxiety, constant inner tension and a sense of not feeling safe;
- emotional overload, irritability or a feeling that your energy keeps running lower;
- avoiding going out, meetings or social situations;
- fear of judgement and criticism, and constant worry about how you look in other people's eyes;
- difficulty understanding, naming and expressing your own emotions;
- emotional numbness, heaviness, inner pressure or a sense that something is wrong;
- physical signs of anxiety, chronic stress and emotional tension;
- recurring emotional and behavioural patterns in relationships;
- burnout, loss of motivation and a feeling of inner exhaustion;
- difficulty adjusting after relocation or after losing a familiar environment or support.
Working together, we can explore which emotions, fears, inner conflicts or recurring patterns may sit behind what you are feeling.
The work is built gradually, with attention to your pace, your emotional safety and your real life situation.
