What relationship counselling addresses
Relationship counselling is not only for couples. Many people come to this work individually — wanting to understand why a particular pattern keeps returning across different relationships, why closeness feels unsafe, or why they consistently attract or create the same dynamic.
The focus is on what each person brings to their relational life: the attachment patterns that have developed over time, the strategies developed to manage closeness and distance, the expectations carried silently, and the ways emotional needs are expressed or suppressed. Understanding these patterns is the beginning of being able to change them.
Common presentations
- Repeated patterns across different relationships — feeling like it always ends the same way
- Higher attachment anxiety — fear of abandonment, hyper-vigilance about the relationship, reassurance-seeking
- Higher attachment avoidance — pulling away when closeness increases, difficulty sustaining intimacy
- Dating anxiety — over-analysis of interactions, difficulty trusting someone new
- Situationships and ambiguity — difficulty leaving unclear arrangements, fear of asking for clarity
- Emotional withdrawal — shutting down during conflict or under relational pressure
- Fear of conflict — avoiding difficult conversations at the cost of authenticity
- Trust wounds — difficulty opening to new relationships after betrayal or loss
- People-pleasing — adjusting constantly to the other person, losing track of your own needs
- Breakups and recovery — processing a relationship ending and understanding what it revealed
Individual relationship work vs. couples counselling
Individual relationship counselling explores the patterns you bring to your relational life — your attachment patterns, emotional responses, internal working models, and the ways these shape who you are drawn to and how you behave in closeness. This work does not require a partner to attend.
Couples counselling, by contrast, focuses on the cycle that develops between two specific people — the communication patterns, conflict dynamics, and emotional distance that emerge in that relationship. Both forms of work are available, and some people move between them. Some relationship difficulties are also shaped by differences in language, culture, family expectations, or relocation. The therapeutic approach
The work draws on attachment theory, emotionally focused frameworks, and systemic approaches to understand relational patterns. The aim is not to judge previous choices or assign blame, but to understand the logic of the pattern — what it was originally trying to protect, and what it now costs. From that understanding, something different becomes possible.
