The expat experience in Dubai
Dubai's expat community is one of the largest in the world — a city where the majority of residents were not born here, and many have moved multiple times. The externals can look impressive: career progression, lifestyle, opportunities. The internals can feel more complicated.
Relocation changes more than geography. It disrupts social networks built over years, creates distance from family and long-standing support systems, and demands constant adaptation — professionally, culturally, and personally. For many people, the pressure to look as though everything is fine adds another layer.
What this work often addresses
- Relocation stress — adjusting to a new country, culture, and social environment
- Loneliness and social disconnection despite a full calendar
- Identity questions — who am I outside the context I built myself in?
- High-performance pressure in a city that rewards achievement and visibility
- Burnout from sustained high performance without recovery
- Relationship strain — pressure on a partnership or family from the relocation itself
- Long-distance relationships and the emotional weight of family separation
- Anxiety about the next move — whether to stay, leave, or return home
- Third-culture experience — not quite fitting in either the home or host country
- Language and cultural barriers to finding appropriate psychological support
Language and cultural context
For Russian and Ukrainian-speaking expats in Dubai, sessions are fully available in both languages. Working in your first language matters — not only for precision, but because emotional experience, family patterns, and cultural expectations are often most accurately expressed in the language in which they were formed. You can read more about this on the Russian-speaking psychologist in Dubai page.
Cultural context is always present in therapy. The unspoken expectations carried from one culture, the adjustments required by another, and the identity questions that emerge at the intersection of both — these are not side issues. They are often central to the work.
Format and availability
Sessions are 50 minutes, available in person in Dubai and online. Online sessions are available for expats currently based in Dubai or those who have relocated elsewhere and want continuity of therapeutic support. All languages — English, Russian, and Ukrainian — are available in both formats.
