Understanding burnout
Burnout is not simply tiredness. It is a state of chronic depletion — emotional, cognitive, and physical — that develops when demands consistently exceed the capacity for recovery. It often affects people who are high-functioning, conscientious, and have pushed through difficulty rather than acknowledged it.
The pattern often involves performance mode as a baseline, emotional numbing as a coping strategy, perfectionism that raises the cost of every output, and an inner critic that makes rest feel like failure. By the time burnout becomes visible, the system has usually been warning for some time.
This may be relevant if
- You are exhausted but unable to stop — rest does not seem to reach the depth of the fatigue
- Work that once felt meaningful now feels empty or oppressive
- You are functioning on the outside but depleted on the inside
- Emotional responses have become flat, numb, or disconnected
- Cynicism, irritability, or detachment has crept in
- You find yourself unable to feel satisfaction even when things go well
- Perfectionism is sustaining the pressure rather than improving the output
- Stress has become a baseline rather than a response to specific demands
Therapy for burnout and chronic stress
Burnout therapy does not begin with productivity strategies. It begins with understanding why the system got here — what beliefs about performance, worth, rest, and responsibility were driving it — and what would actually need to change for recovery to be sustainable.
This involves nervous system regulation work, understanding the patterns that maintain pressure (perfectionism, people-pleasing, inability to set limits), and gradually building genuine recovery capacity rather than performing it.
High-functioning anxiety and stress
High-functioning anxiety describes a presentation where anxiety is masked by productivity and external achievement. The person appears to be coping well — and may even be succeeding by external measures — while internally carrying chronic tension, worry, and exhaustion. This pattern often goes unrecognised precisely because the performance is so maintained.
