Protective Strategies
Protective strategies are the behaviours, adaptations, and habits the self developed in order to remain safe, connected, or acceptable — often in environments where direct expression of needs carried risk. People-pleasing, rigid boundary structures, emotional withdrawal, silent contracts, and the need to maintain control are all strategies that made sense when they were formed. The difficulty is that they tend to persist long after the original conditions have changed, costing more than they protect. Understanding a protective strategy is not about removing it — it is about understanding what it was protecting against, and whether a different response is now available.
